1. Commitment to Responsible Pet Ownership
The adopter agrees to provide a loving and humane environment for the puppy for its entire life. This includes providing adequate food, water, shelter, exercise, and affection. The puppy will be a residential companion and will not be used for any commercial purposes, including breeding or fighting.
2. Veterinary Care
a. Initial Vaccinations: The adopter acknowledges that this puppy requires a series of vaccinations to protect it from common and potentially fatal diseases. The adopter agrees to secure the first round of core puppy vaccinations from a licensed veterinarian at their own expense. This typically includes:
Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus (DAPP): A series of shots administered every 3-4 weeks until the puppy is approximately 16-20 weeks of age.
Rabies: Administered as required by state and local laws, typically around 16 weeks of age.
The adopter understands that failure to complete the full series of puppy vaccinations can leave the puppy vulnerable to illness.
b. Ongoing Veterinary Care: The adopter commits to providing regular veterinary care for the puppy throughout its life. This includes, but is not limited to, annual wellness exams, routine dental care, and prompt medical attention for any illness or injury.
3. Financial Responsibility and Estimated Annual Cost
The adopter acknowledges that owning a dog involves significant financial commitment. The estimated annual cost of care for a dog can range from $1,500 to over $4,000, depending on the dog's size, breed, and unforeseen medical needs. This estimate includes expenses for:
Food and Treats
Routine Veterinary Care (annual exams, vaccinations, parasite prevention)
Grooming
Training
Toys and Supplies
Pet Insurance (optional but recommended)
Emergency Medical Care
The adopter confirms that they are financially prepared to meet these ongoing costs for the lifetime of the dog.
4. Home Environment
a. Fenced-In Yard: The adopter verifies that they have a securely fenced-in yard that will provide a safe space for the puppy to exercise and play. The fence must be in good repair and of a height appropriate to contain the puppy as it grows.
b. Landlord Permission: If the adopter rents their home, they have provided verifiable proof of landlord permission to have a dog of this breed and anticipated size on the premises.
5. Spaying and Neutering
The adopter agrees to have the puppy spayed (if female) or neutered (if male) by a licensed veterinarian. This procedure must be completed by the time the puppy reaches [e.g., six months of age or a date specified by the rescue]. Proof of spay/neuter from the veterinarian must be provided to David Bower by the agreed-upon date.
6. No Return Policy and Assumption of Full Responsibility
The adopter understands and agrees that this adoption is final. Under no circumstances may the puppy be returned to David Bower. The adopter assumes full and sole responsibility for the puppy's health, behavior, and well-being from the moment of adoption.
This "no return" policy is in place to encourage a lifetime commitment to the puppy. Should the adopter become unable to care for the dog at any point in its life, it is their responsibility to find a suitable and loving new home.
7. Release of Liability
The adopter hereby releases David Bower from any and all liability for any personal injury, property damage, or expenses incurred by the adopter or any other person as a result of the adopted puppy. The adopter understands that while David Bower has provided all known information about the puppy's health and temperament, no guarantees can be made. The adopter accepts the puppy "as is" and assumes all risks associated with its ownership.
By signing below, the adopter certifies that they have read, understood, and agree to all the terms and conditions outlined in this Responsible Puppy Adoption Agreement.
